He's there to act as a cattle prod to poke Light into motion here and there and nothing more. In the Manga, Anime, and other earlier adaptations, Ryuk's promise that he'll eventually turn on Light in the end gets forgotten, because Ryuk is so entertained by Light's antics. In every other adaptation, Ryuk and Light bond as much as a bored death.
